Hardy House from the shore of Lake Michigan
The Thomas Hardy house was built by Wright in 1905 for the Mayor of Racine, Wisconsin. It sits on a hill overlooking Lake Michigan. Many large trees block much of its view, but they also give it privacy.
Hardy house from the sidewalk.
This demonstrates Wright’s desire to build right up to the land line. Most of the homes on this street are pretty close to the sidewalk, since the hill drops away from the street pretty quickly, but Wright’s entryway for the Hardy house is literally at the line of the sidewalk.
Most of the windows are either on the top level, or on the lake side. This gives the home privacy.
You can see the owner has opened windows to get some cross ventilation on a hot day. I couldn’t see if air conditioning had been added to this home.
