The Euchtman House is another that is close to home, but one that I’ve somehow missed photographing for years. Like the Marden house, I kept setting out for a trip to go see it, only to have something come up and distract me. I’d tell myself, “It’s only an hour from my house, I’ll just go another day.” Well that day finally arrived last weekend.

The Euchtman House is beautiful and in a wonderful neighborhood. We were there on a Saturday and noticed that it appears to be in an orthodox Jewish neighborhood. It was the sabbath and many families were walking home from temple. It is very cool to see. The area known as Pikesville is a great little community in Baltimore. This area is thriving and has a nice feel to it. We picked up on it instantly as we drove through. The area would be a nice one to live in.

The Euchtman house is something of a mystery. No-one knows anything about Joseph Euchtman. I haven’t gone through and searched the Taliesin archives or anything, but I know that there are some authors out there who have… and if they found anything, the didn’t include it in their books. Storrer, Heinz and Thompson (the three wise men, so to speak) have nothing on them. Google, Yahoo, Wikipedia and AltaVista searches turn up nothing but the existance of the house. Very interesting!!!

The home itself is a linear Usonian — meaning that the rooms are all lined up rather than in an “L” shape. It is built with the carport and driveway right up to the lot line on one side so as to take advantage of a rather large, wedge-shaped lot. It has 2 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths. It is on enough of a hill so that the dining room kitchen and living room are a few steps down from the bedrooms and full bath. Storrer’s plans show that it is built on a 2’x4′ grid.

The house has been added to over the years. The glass of the living room and dining room face the south east. This portion has had a large patio added to it and it looks like there’s a swimming pool there too. It is a little hard to see from the street. You can see the patio from one of my photos.

If any of you have any information about Joseph Euchtman, please let me know. I’m curious to find out. You can drop me an E-mail if you like.
